If there's one night that turns the whole ship into a proper party, it's Pirate Night. It's the evening everyone looks forward to, and after sailing with Disney since 2021 it's still one of our favourite nights at sea. Here's what actually happens, what to pack, and the bits people always wish they'd known beforehand.
Does Pirate Night happen on every cruise?
This is the first thing to check, because Pirate Night doesn't run on every itinerary. So don't be too disappointed if you don't get a Pirate Night, these sailings often have a different themed night instead.
It's worth looking at your Navigator app once you're onboard (or your cruise documents beforehand) to see if it's scheduled on your sailing.
It does run on selected shorter sailings too, including 3-night cruises, so you won't miss out on the party, the deck show or the fun if you're only away for a few nights. The one difference is the menu, which we'll come to below.
The bandanas in your stateroom
One of the loveliest little touches: you'll find pirate bandanas waiting for you in your stateroom. It's a small thing, but it's exactly the kind of detail that gets everyone in the mood and sets the tone for the night ahead. Pirate Night is your excuse to get into the spirit, and guests absolutely do. You can go as full-on pirate as you like, from a bandana and a striped top right through to the full hat, boots and cutlass. There's no pressure either way, but it's a lot more fun if you join in, and you'll be in good company.
Characters in their pirate best
The characters get dressed up too, swapping their usual outfits for pirate costumes for the night. It's a brilliant photo opportunity, and it's one of the rare chances to meet some characters you won't usually find roaming the ship. Keep an eye out for Captain Hook and Smee, and the big one for a lot of guests, Captain Jack Sparrow himself.
Mickey's Pirates of the Caribbean deck party
The centrepiece is Mickey's Pirates of the Caribbean character deck party up on the pool deck. It's loud and full of energy, and it's where the whole ship seems to gather as the night builds. Its worth noting if for any reason there is inclement they will move the deck party from the pool deck into he atrium and it will be a scaled version due to space constraints. Usually they put a message on the app and funnel vision if the deck party has been moved, After all you dont want Mickey and friends getting very wet or blown away.
On some sailings there will be second deck party later in the evening, without characters which can be just as good fun. On the newer wish class ships this is a mini parle rock concert type show . Captain Jack Sparrow often makes an appearence at this show just before the fireworks, Unfortunatly on European sailings, there are no fireworks, you'll only get the character deck party, often after the later dining seating so everyone can enjoy it. This is due to european maritime law.
The Pirate Night menu
On sailings of 4 nights or more, the main rotational restaurants serve a special pirate-themed menu, and it's the same menu in each restaurant that evening rather than the usual rotation. On shorter sailings, like a 3-night cruise, they don't run the special pirate menu. That's actually good news, because it means you won't lose any of the normal rotational menus you'd otherwise be looking forward to across a short trip. You still get the full Pirate Night experience everywhere else, just with the regular dining menu that evening. If you dont fancy the pirate night menu then why not pop up on deck and enjoy a grab and go snack while watching Funnel vision where they often show Pirate themed movies on pirate night.
